äSTOS WORD MANUAL à
This document is the basic manual for the STOS WORD word processor, provided
free with the STOS Club Newsletter. The manual is not over wonderful, but
should enable you to use STOS WORD with little trouble.
äThe Programs à
STOSWORD.PRG Desktop runnable version
STOSWORD.ACB Accessory Version for STOS
STOSWORD.BAS STOS Basic Version for you to modify.
All 3 versions of STOSWORD have exactly the same features, except that on the
.PRG version, you cannot re-size the memory, and RAM save is a bit of a waste
of effort.
You may find the odd bug or two in STOS WORD (we have bug hunted it, but they
always turn up). If you do, please let us know so that we can fix it for a
later update. Updates will be available as a minimal charge at a later date,
and will be advertised in the newsletter.
äUsing STOS WORD à
STOS Word is intended to be a simple and easy to use word processor. Most of
the functions can be accessed by the menu and the mouse, although some
functions are keyboard controlled. The more used menu controls also have
keyboard "Shortcuts" accessed by pressing the CONTROL key and the Shortcut key.
For example, the shortcut for find next is CONTROL F (Ctrl-F). The shortcuts
can all be re-defined using the SHOW CONTROL CHARS function on the GOODIES
menu.
STOS Word has an automatic word wrap, so that you can type without having to
worry about going off the end of a line, or having words split in two. You can
type in INSERT mode or OVERWRITE mode exactly the same as in STOS by pressing
the INSERT key to change mode. In insert mode the flashing cursor will be large
and in overwrite mode is becomes a line.
The TAB key will move the cursor to the next horizontal Tab position, shown
on the "Tab Ruler" at the top of the page by the ^ marks. To change the Tab
settings just click on the ruler with the left button. The [] marks on the
ruler show the left and right margins. These are changed by clicking on them
with the right button, and then clicking on their new location. Unfortunately
they don't work too wonderfully yet !
Delete and Backspace work as normal, as do the arrow keys and Return/Enter.
By pressing Control Delete you can delete a whole line, and Shift Insert (or
Return when in insert mode) you can insert a line. By holding down Shift when
pressing the up and down arrow keys you can scroll up or down whole pages at a
time.
äAutolocating à
So that you can move rapidly around your document, to and from particular
locations, the Autolocator functions have been included. By holding down the
Shift key and pressing one of the function keys you memorise the location of
the cursor and the page number into that function key's memory. By pressing the
function key on its own, STOS Word returns the cursor to exactly the point that
was memorised !
äThe Menus à
Most of STOS Word's functions are accessed from the menu bar. There are 5
headings :-
STOS WORD: Credits and setup functions
FILE : Disk and Printing Operations
FIND : The Search and Replace functions
BLOCK : Block Cut/Paste and Justification options
GOODIES : Everything else !
Sometimes the menu bar falls asleep, to get it back just click on it.
OK - time for a guided tour of all the menu options I think!
äSTOS WORD menu à
About : Shadow Software Credits. Nothing flashy.
Change Mode : Here's one of the things STOS Word can do that no other ST
word processor can. That is change resolution while working!
Normally with any other word processor, you have to back to
the desktop if you want to change from Medium to Low
resolution or vice-versa. With STOS Word, just pick Change
Mode and it's done ! This option is not available in High
resolution Mode.
Layout : Allows you to set the size of the pages you want to use, and
the top and bottom margins.
Printer Settings: So that you can set up STOS Word to work with your printer,
the Printer Settings option lets you change all the control
codes used for the printer routines. They are entered in Hex
and can be changed to whatever you want, although it is
usually a good idea to consult the manual for your printer.
The default setup is for an Epson compatible 80 column
printer.
Save & Load
Settings : The Printer options and Layout setup are all saved and
loaded with these options.
Size Memory : When it starts up, STOS Word automatically grabs as much
memory as is available. If, for instance, you wanted to work
on a game and write the manual at the same time you would
want quite a bit of that memory for the game. So picking
Size Memory allows you to choose how many pages in length
you want your document to be, and STOS Word will only use
the memory required for that number of pages.
äFILE Menu à
Load File : Pretty self-explanitory really. This option will load STOS
Word files, or pure ASCII files.
Save File : This saves the document as a STOS Word file.
Save as ASCII: This saves the document without the STOS Word header data,
useful for writing read.me files in Low resolution.
Merge File : Loads in and inserts a file at the current cursor line.
Delete File : Pretty obvious.
Load .DOC File: Allows you to load up documents created with 1st Word (TM)
or 1st Word Plus (also TM). It will strip out all control
characters.
Load Icons : One of STOS Word's more powerful features is the ability to
use STOS Icons in your documents. This option will load an
Icon memory bank.
Print File : Outputs the whole document to the printer. You can select
Tractor Feed for continous stationery, or Single Sheet feed.
Print This Page: Allows you to print a single page of the document.
Clear Memory: Wipes the document.
RAM Save : Lets you save your document into a memory bank, so that you
don't have to save it to disk when, for instance, you want
to keep changing between editing a game and its manual. As
soon as STOS Word is accessed again, the RAM saved file is
automatically loaded up.
Quit : About as obvious as can be !
äThe FIND Menu à
Find Text : Enter a search string and STOS Word will look for it.
Find Next : Searches for the next occurence of the search string.
Replace Text: Enter a search string and a replacement string. Whenever the
search string is found, it will be replaced by the
replacement string.
Replace Next: Replaces next occurence of search string.
Next Page &
Previous Page: Same as Shift and Up/Down arrows.
Goto Page : Lets you type in a page number and jump directly to it.
äThe Block Menu à
Mark Start : Memorises the start line of the block.
Mark End : Memorises the end line of the block.
Remove Block: Deletes the block from memory.
Copy Block : Copies the block to the current cursor location, inserting
it there.
Move Block : Moves the block to the current cursor location.
Write Block
2 Disk : Saves the block to disk as an ASCII file.
Marks Off : Removes the Start and End Marks.
Justify Block
Left/Right/
Centre : Lets you Left/Right/Centre Justify the whole block.
äThe Goodies Menu à
Pick Icon : Lets you select an icon to place in the document. The icon
can then be placed by clicking with the mouse, or pressing
any key.
Place Icon (show by the current Icon)
Lets you place the currently selected icon.
Word Count : Allows you to check how many words are in your document.
Left/Right/
Centre Justify : So you can justify your text one line at a time.
Control List : Shows you the special control keys.
Show Ctrl Chars: Lets you re-define all the control characters.
There is one more useful function, that is by clicking on the text with the
right button. The locator window will appear and let you go to anywhere in the
document.
There are some slight differences when you are using STOS Word in High
Resolution. The icons will be seen smaller than in Low or medium resolution,
with what looks like garbage below them. Do not destroy the garbage if you
intend to print the file, as this is the data for the lower part of the icon !
Also, Change Mode will not work.
